LSU senior Terrance Laird, a two-time Southeastern Conference Indoor champion in the 200 meters and world leader in the event this year at 20.28 seconds, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss his pursuit of becoming the first Tigers' male athlete to win the title at the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships at Randal Tyson Track Center, along with LSU's quest to capture its first team championship since 2004 in Fayetteville, Ark. Laird ranks No. 8 in U.S. indoor history, along with being the No. 10 all-time collegiate indoor performer and No. 13 among all global competitors. He reflects on eclipsing the 2006 program record of 20.30 held by Xavier Carter, along with the SEC indoor championship all-time mark of 20.34 established in 2017 by Jereem Richards of Alabama. Laird revisits Florida's Joe Fahnbulleh clocking 20.32 seconds in the first section of the Feb. 27 conference final and his response in the second section to repeat as champion after running 20.52 last season at Texas A&M. He shares his desire to compete against both Fahnbulleh and Georgia's Matthew Boling in the same race March 13 in the 200 championship. Laird also reveals his intent to participate on the 4x400 relay lineup at the NCAA final and his goal of contributing 12.5 points to the Tigers' bid to secure a third overall team crown. He also analyzes the strengths of LSU's lineup in the sprints, hurdles and jumps, and how they match up against Arkansas, Georgia and Oregon. Laird examines the impact of freshmen Sean Burrell and Sean Dixon-Bodie on the Tigers' roster, and how instrumental they could be in LSU contending for a championship. He expresses gratitude for the leadership of head coach Dennis Shaver, along with sprint coach Bennie Brazell, as well as strength and conditioning coach Irving "Boo" Schexnayder, who has been significant in Laird's recovery from an offseason injury. He speaks about the added depth that will join LSU's roster during the upcoming outdoor season, and their motivation to win the program's first team title since 2002, along with preparing for the Olympic Trials in June.
