LSU senior JuVaughn Harrison, the only male athlete in NCAA Division 1 history to win the long jump and high jump crowns in the same year at the 2019 outdoor championship meet in Austin, Texas, as well as the best all-time combination jumper in both events in the United States and No. 2 in the world behind only Germany's Henry Lauterbach, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss winning both titles Feb. 27 at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark., and his pursuit of another memorable double March 12 at the Division 1 Indoor final at the same venue. Harrison reveals the challenges of having both competitions in the same day at nationals, especially with the expectation of a tougher high jump competition than at the SEC meet, when he only needed to clear three heights and captured the championship with a 7-2.50 (2.20m) clearance, well below his personal-best 7-5.75 (2.28m). He examines the work that needs to be put in during practice, in order to simulate the warmup and recovery for both competitions, which allows him to transition from high jump to long jump on a very short turnaround. Harrison reflects on matching Florida State's Isaac Grimes with a world-leading 27-4 (8.33m) on his first attempt in the long jump, and shares the significance of being in the top five all-time collegiate indoor jumpers, along with Alabama's Miguel Pate, Houston's Carl Lewis, as well as Arkansas' Erick Walder and Jarrion Lawson. Harrison, who is also equal to the No. 11 American indoor long jumper in history, speaks about how the renovation and upgrades made to the Randal Tyson Track Center during the pandemic have led to a more dynamic and ballistic runway for the horizontal jumps. He analyzes how close the team battle will be at nationals involving Oregon, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida and LSU, and how Harrison welcomes the challenge to contribute a potential 20 points for the Tigers in their pursuit of the championship. Harrison also weighs the impact of freshman triple jumper Sean Dixon-Bodie and how he could play an important role in LSU's title pursuit, along with world-leading 200-meter runner Terrance Laird and many others, especially the 4x400 relay. He also provides an update on finishing his degree in Sports Administration this fall.
