Georgia redshirt sophomore Kyle Garland, the two-time Southeastern Conference indoor heptathlon champion and seventh athlete in program history to surpass 6,000 points, joins DyeStat editor to discuss extending the Bulldogs' conference title streak to nine in a row and being the top qualifier at 6,012 points entering the March 11 and 12 competition at the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. Garland is attempting to become only the second Georgia athlete, joining Devon Williams in 2017, to win an NCAA indoor heptathlon title. He examines the significance of eclipsing the 6,000-point barrier for the first time in his career at the SEC Championships, along with emphasizing the importance of clearing a personal-best 15-7 (4.75m) in the pole vault, as well as achieving a 50-4 (15.34m) in the shot put. Garland, who excels most in the sprints, hurdles and jumps, also reflects on his recovery from a hamstring injury and how it challenged him to focus only on doing shot put drills until he was able to return to more dynamic exercises and a regular running schedule. He speaks about training with Karel Tilga and Johannes Erm, along with having alumni such as Garrett Scantling to provide their insight and experience in several events. Garland also expresses gratitude for his ability to learn from and be challenged by Georgia coach Petros Kyprianou, in addition to appreciating his leadership throughout the pandemic. He looks forward to competing once more against SEC rival Markus Ballengee of Arkansas, along with squaring off against German athlete Leo Neugebauer from Texas, as well as Ayden Owens from Michigan and Max Vollmer of Oregon. Garland analyzes the anticipated women's pentathlon rematch involving Anna Hall of Georgia and Tyra Gittens of Texas A&M, and how all of their performances have helped bring more attention to the multi-events this season. He also reveals his work with the Georgia Way Ambassadors and the impact they have in developing leaders on campus and within the community. |
