Arkansas senior Krissy Gear, the Razorbacks' program record holder in the indoor mile at 4:31.83 and anchor for the nation's leading indoor distance medley relay at 10:53.77, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in the mile and 3,000 meters at the Feb. 25-27 Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville. Gear reflects on both performances Feb. 12-13 at the Tyson Invitational, including eclipsing the Arkansas mile record 4:32.48, previously established by Dominique Scott in 2015. She also revisits teaming with Kennedy Thomson, Kethilin Campbell and Shafiqua Maloney in the DMR, which she anchored in 4:34.26 to help the Razorbacks achieve the No. 2 time in program history, trailing only the Arkansas record 10:51.89, also set in 2015. Gear examines the distance depth Arkansas boasts, with multiple qualifiers for the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships in every event from the 800 to the 5,000, along with the top mark in the DMR, as the Razorbacks look to repeat following their 2019 title. She speaks about her own improvement in the mile, having run 4:44.26 in 2018 at Furman, and learning to become a more efficient and savvy competitor during the middle laps of the race, allowing her to showcase her closing speed in the final 400 meters. Gear also credits her teammates for her development as an athlete, and how she faces daily challenges in workouts to keep pace with her fellow distance competitors, including roommate Gracie Hyde, who has improved from a 4:54.32 miler at Central Arkansas to 4:37.57 at the Tyson Invitational. Gear also shares the impact of Michelle Fyfe on the Arkansas program, especially when it comes to partnering with Restore Humanity, which works with an orphanage in Sirembe, Kenya, to provide opportunities for those children who desire to attend a university in their home country or even in the United States. She also provides a timeline for completion of her degree in sociology this spring and returning to Arkansas for a fifth year of eligibility while starting her Master's program.
