Jacious Sears, a senior All-American at Tennessee and the No. 2 all-time collegiate indoor competitor in the women's 60-meter dash at 7.04 seconds, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in the 60 and 200 meters March 8-9 at the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships at the TRACK at New Balance in Boston, Mass. Sears took third in the 60 at the Division 1 indoor final last year, along with placing ninth in the 200 in Albuquerque, N.M., followed by finishing third in the 100-meter dash, fourth in the 200 and 10th in the 4x100 relay at the NCAA outdoor championship meet in June at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. Sears shares how significant faith and her spiritual journey have been in providing calm and reassurance throughout her athletic career. She explains how meaningful the support of family, friends, teammates and coaches have been as well, especially since transferring to Tennessee after beginning her collegiate career at Miami (Florida). Sears examines how impactful the leadership, wisdom, insight and perspective of Tennessee Coach Duane Ross has been since joining the program, in addition to the experience of Volunteers' sprint coach Ron Garner. She reflects on competing at New Balance Nationals Outdoor during her career as a prep athlete at Palm Beach Gardens High in Florida, and taking a photo with former North Carolina A&T standout and NCAA Division 1 indoor champion Kayla White while she was in Greensboro, in addition to sharing conversation with Coach Ross when he led the Aggies' program. Sears analyzes how those interactions foreshadowed her future and being mentored by Coach Ross. She speaks about how they both coaches Ross and Garner have challenged her as a student-athlete and competitor, in addition to how much confidence she has gained from their belief in her potential this season, as well as in the future as a professional. Sears revisits placing second Feb. 24 in the 60-meter final at the SEC Indoor Championships in Arkansas behind Jamaican competitor Brianna Lyston of LSU, and how valuable her experiences at the conference and national meets have been in preparing her to compete in Boston. She also speaks about her excitement to advance to both the 60 and 200 finals for the first time, along with having the potential to become the first women's indoor 60-meter Division 1 champion in Tennessee program history, and how inspired she is after watching last year's Bowerman Award winner Julien Alfred capture the 60-meter gold medal March 2 for Saint Lucia at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.
