Published by
Alabama senior Isaac Odugbesan, a three-time Southeastern Conference champion in the men's shot put and an NCAA indoor and outdoor finalist, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing March 12 at the Division 1 Indoor Championships at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. Odugbesan revisits repeating as SEC Indoor champion with a personal-best 67-11.50 (20.71m) effort Feb. 26 in the final competition held at the Gilliam Indoor facility at Texas A&M. He also shares pride for four Alabama competitors finishing in the top eight, contributing 19 points to the Crimson Tide's third-place total of 71 overall. He also reflects on teammate Bobby Colantonio capturing his first career SEC championship in the men's weight throw. Odugbesan, representing Nigeria, examines the depth of the field for the Division 1 championship meet, led by reigning indoor and outdoor champion Turner Washington of Arizona State, along with Adrian Piperi of Texas, Daniel McArthur of North Carolina and Jordan Geist of Arizona. He also speaks about his experiences last year in his NCAA championship debuts, following his transfer from Middle Tennessee State. Odugbesan explains his path from his home country to come to Murfreesboro, Tenn., and the challenge of not having a veteran shot put coach on staff, resulting in him watching YouTube videos to learn proper technique. He expresses gratitude for his collaboration with Alabama throws coach Derek Yush, along with the support of his teammates, to help him develop into an SEC champion and NCAA title contender. Odugbesan, one of 16 collegiate student-athletes chosen to be part of the World Wrestling Entertainment Next in Line program, analyzes his tryout opportunity in August in Las Vegas, and his potential to join the company following his graduation. He shares his experiences meeting several famous wrestling personalities and his motivation to train in hopes of landing a prominent role as an athlete and competitor in the organization, and the excitement of his family for his future. Odugbesan also speaks about his passion for art and how there are several similiarities in being able to create technical efficiency in the shot put, along with showcasing detail in expression. |
